How to create inclusive environment for small business growth, Black-owned businesses in Chicago after COVID-19 pandemic height

CHICAGO (WLS) — 1968 was a tumultuous year in this country. The riots that following the killing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. prompted Chicago business leaders and Black pastors to create an organization called Chicago United.

It works to create diversity, equity and inclusion in the corporate community. The vision is a Chicago region that is the most inclusive business ecosystem in the country.

After more than 50 years, a pandemic and the fight for racial justice, how are things going?

Tiffany Hamel Johnson, the president and CEO of Chicago United, said minority businesses were “decimated” in 2020. And most of those who lost their jobs, were people of color. Now in late 2022, she said the employment numbers are building “back up” though complete recovery will take some time.

WATCH: Our Chicago Part 2

Part of how Chicago United works to achieve it’s mission is by fostering future future leaders.

“You can’t have a pipeline and have people of color get on boards and in C-suites if you’re not creating it from the entry level position.” she said. “Corporate Inclusion Institute was created just to help that leader. Along with that we created the Emerging Leader Series this year along with a mid-level manager series that really help those, again, emerging leaders that are coming out, that need help with advancement and professional development.”

Chicago United is holding its Bridge Awards Celebration on Nov. 16. The theme this year is the power of inclusion.

“We believe that coalitions and that the representation of everyone at the table. There’s power in that,” said Johnson. “No one left behind. There’s enough for all of us.”

Missing ballots found in New Jersey county

The missing ballots from four voting districts in New Jersey were found on Thursday at the Mercer County Board of Elections, where they had been sitting since Election Day.

Ballots were found from three districts in Princeton and one in Robbinsville, which officials earlier said were lost after being shuttled from the voting place to the election board. Paper ballots had to be used after a software glitch rendered the Dominion electronic voting machines unusable.

The Robbinsville ballots were counted Thursday and the Princeton ballots on Friday, according to the New Jersey Globe. The missing ballots were predicted to decide several local elections with narrow margins. The ballots from one of the four districts were recorded as having arrived at the Board of Elections office, while records show the office never received ballots from the remaining three.

A small number of additional ballots were also found inside voting machines that were opened on Thursday after Superior Court Judge William Anklowitz signed an order allowing the machines to be opened.

Mercer County’s superintendent of elections kept his office open on Veterans Day, as well as the weekend, to count ballots.

County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello has asked the Mercer County prosecutor to open an investigation into the incident, according to the report.

Energy efficiency, electrification and renewable energy three pillars of India’s energy transition: MNRE official

NEW DELHI : Energy efficiency, electrification and renewable energy are the three pillars of India’s energy transition towards a secure net-zero pathway, said Lalit Bohra, Joint Secretary, MNRE.

Addressing the session ‘Role of Renewable Energy, Hydrogen and Transition Fuels towards India’s target of Net Zero’ at COP27, Bohra said that the amendments in Electricity Act 2003 promotes decentralized renewable energy applications by making rooftop owners as prosumers. “The National Green Hydrogen Mission was in the process of being notified to promote the industrialisation of hydrogen.”

On the occasion Kolluru Krishan, Chair, FICCI Climate Change Committee and Chairman, CVC India Infrastructure, said that energy storage and hydrogen are long-term perspectives and natural gas is an indispensable transition fuel. “Bio-methane is a nature-based solution for decarbonising gas.”

“Along with the movement towards greener fuels, reforestation and carbon capture were essential. Countries are providing guarantees to reduce the cost of capital to risk-averse institutional investors in green projects,” said Sean Kidney, CEO, Climate Bonds Initiative.

During the panel discussion, Rambabu Paravastu, Chief Sustainability Officer, Greenko Group said that the availability of long-term offtake agreements for newer green technologies will ensure financing for these projects. “We must continuously deploy proven green technologies as we move towards the net-zero targets.”

“Pragmatic green hydrogen standards for producing large-scale, cost-effective green hydrogen. All clean technologies that help bend the carbon emissions curve should be utilised,” said Vikram Kapur, Chief Growth Officer, Renew Power.

During the session, Indian Oil showcased its initiatives in biofuels, renewable energy, and its solar cooker unit ‘Surya Nutan’. Shreejit Basu, Senior Manager (Alternate Energy), Indian Oil Corporation, said that around 20,000 fuel stations of Indian Oil are powered by solar power.

FICCI is leading a high-level business delegation to UNFCCC COP27 with representatives from biofuels, renewable energy, hydrogen, manufacturing, infrastructure, services, and electric vehicle sectors. In addition, FICCI delegates have represented at various sessions at this year’s COP.

GOP Senator Says ‘Old’ Republican Party Is ‘Dead,’ Calls for Major Changes

Republicans need to “build something new” after failing to retake the Senate majority following the 2022 midterm elections, a GOP senator said.

Democrats picked up a key Senate seat in Nevada after Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) defeated Republican challenger Adam Laxalt after numerous news outlets called the race in Masto’s favor on Saturday. Days before that, GOP candidate Mehmet Oz conceded to Democrat John Fetterman, while outlets called the race for Arizona’s Senate seat in favor of incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.).

“The old party is dead. Time to bury it. Build something new,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) wrote on social media. A day before, Hawley said Republican Senate leaders are failing to back initiatives that are supported by their voters.

“Washington Republicanism lost big Tuesday night. When your ‘agenda’ is cave to Big Pharma on insulin, cave to [Sen. Chuck] Schumer on gun control & Green New Deal (‘infrastructure’), and tease changes to Social Security and Medicare, you lose,” Hawley wrote over the weekend.

Hawley, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), and Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) reportedly circulated a letter calling for Republicans to postpone their Senate leadership vote. It is presumed that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is vying to reclaim his Senate leadership position, although he has not responded to the three Republicans’ letter.

“I don’t know why Senate GOP would hold a leadership vote for the next Congress before this election is finished. We have a runoff in [Georgia] … are they saying that doesn’t matter? Don’t disenfranchise,” Hawley wrote late last week in response to Rubio’s statement that the vote needs to be held on a later date.

Some, including former President Donald Trump, called for McConnell to be ousted as leader of the GOP in the Senate. Earlier this year, McConnell indicated that he would win his leadership reelection.

“He is the WORST!” Trump wrote on Truth Social of McConnell.

Strange Results

Ahead of the midterm elections, numerous polls showed Laxalt ahead of Masto by as many as 5 percentage points. Some forecasters claimed there would be a “red wave” in Congress, buoyed by dissatisfaction over the U.S. economy, inflation, gas prices, and President Joe Biden’s low approval rating.

As it was revealed that Republicans would not be able to gain as many seats in the Senate and House, there have been efforts to blame the party’s performance on its leaders, including McConnell, House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy, and Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. Some have also blamed the losses on President Donald Trump after some Senate candidates that he endorsed didn’t prevail—while simultaneously elevating Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who won reelection by about 20 percentage points last week.

For the House races, Republicans won by about 6 million more votes over Democrat candidates but lost in many races. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an Epoch Times contributor, said the final result is bizarre to him.

“I’ve never been as wrong as I was this year,” Gingrich said last week. “It makes me challenge every model I’m aware of, and realize that I have to really stop and spend a good bit of time thinking and trying to put it all together.”

KTN News Anchor Kelvin Nyakundi Speaks on Balancing Music & Work

Kelvin Nyakundi, an anchor at KTN News, on Sunday, November 13, opened up about his life working in media and being a member of a music group.

Nyakundi belongs to the Shofar music group, consisting of 150 members that began in 2013. He is the group’s organizing secretary and he is involved in planning of schedules including where and when the group will perform.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Nyakundi, stated that since his job is a demanding, he finds it hard balancing the two roles which are part of his life.

“It is not easy. We meet for practice on Saturdays and Sundays and these play as my off days too hence making it easy for me. At times am supposed to meet for practice on Friday evening and get held up at work, leaving so late and tired,” he explained.

However, this also robs him of time as he is held up all seven days in a week hence lacking time to even visit his family.

The most challenging moment he encountered was during the elections period when he had no off days as is the nature of media.

“Elections time was so hard but I always create time to cover up for the practicing moment I have missed,” he expounded.

On November 13, part of the group performed on Citizen TV‘s Rauka show, hosted by celebrated media personality Joyce Omondi. In his introduction, Nyakundi stated that he sings tenor one. However, it was not easy for him, because of the nature of his job and how media in Kenya works.

“I reminded our group leader of the nature of my job and he confirmed to be aware but since I am part of the group I had to appear,” he stated.

Nyakundi wanted to stay behind the camera but this would have resulted in a voice imbalance in the group since they had been arranged strategically.

He described singing as part of his life as he began singing at a young age in Sunday schools years back.

“I was part of the singing games and I remember I was the only male among all the girls though another boy joined us later on,’ he noted.

He later joined the school choir in primary and secondary school and university. He actively participated in music and drama festivals.

While in high school, he was the leader of morning devotions. He was also part of the church choir back at home and would continue participating during school holidays.

The budding business journalist who formerly worked at Metropol TV, described Shofar as a great participant in his career as it helps him soothe his mind after work.

At KTN, Nyakundi, who has a degree in broadcast journalism, anchors and reports business news. He also hosts some segments like News at One and Africa Speaks.

An alumnus of Multimedia University, he also worked a news anchor for Switch TV and Fanaka Digital.

San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Chargers: Sunday Night Football Week 10 preview, picks, top prop bets, more

Two California playoff contenders do battle when the Los Angeles Chargers travel north to take on the San Francisco 49ers.

Los Angeles Chargers (5-3) at San Francisco 49ers (4-4)

Game Details:

  • Location: Levi;’s Stadium in San Francisco, CA
  • Time: Sunday, November 13th at 8:20 p.m. ET
  • Channel: NBC

Betting Stats:

  • MONEYLINE: SF (-350), LAC (+275)
  • SPREAD: SF -7.5
  • OVER/UNDER: 45

Any discussion about this game starts with the Chargers’ injury report. It will be yet another week where Los Angeles will be without receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Those are obviously two big losses that drastically reshape how they will attack the San Francisco defense.

Mainly, Los Angeles will rely on running back Austin Ekeler, who has 10 touchdowns on the season, six rushing and four receiving. That puts him in a tie with Cleveland’s Nick Chubb for the most touchdowns in the NFL; however, Ekeler has averaged just 3.1 yards per carry in the last three games as teams key in on him. That’s bad news against a 49ers’ defense that is the best in the NFL against the run, allowing just 86.1 yards per game.

However, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has used Ekeler a lot in the screen game with both Williams and Allen out. While it has been effective, it means that Herbert has averaged just 4.3 completed air yards per attempt on the year, which is the second-lowest in the NFL and makes this offense a bit less dynamic, even if Herbert is averaging 275.1 yards per game during that same stretch.

When he does take shots down the field, he’s working with second-year receiver Joshua Palmer, who had a career-high 106 receiving yards against the Falcons last week, slot receiver DeAndre Carter, and tight end Gerald Everett, who has 32 catches on the season.

The Chargers have been able to remain moderately effective on offense because they’ve allowed only 10 sacks, which is the fewest in football. However, this 49ers’ defense is also 8th in DVOA against the pass, so there is really no easy way to attack them.

Of course, San Francisco has dealt with injuries of their own this week with cornerback Jason Verrett and defensive end Arik Armstead both being rule out for this game. Getting Verrett back was going to be important for San Francisco, who lost starter Emmanuel Moseley to a torn ACL in Week 5.

However, the Chargers also have defensive injuries of their own with star pass rusher Joey Bosa and cornerback J.C. Jackson both on IR. The defense has struggled on the field this year too, ranking 29th in DOVA against the run and allowing 5.7 yards per carry, which is the worst mark in the NFL.

That’s good news for Christian McCaffrey and this San Francisco offense that we know wants to run the ball in a number of different ways. Receiver/running back Deebo Samuel will also return from injury this week, so they should have their whole complement of weapons, which will make things hard on this Chargers’ defense.

With defenses keying in on CMC and Deebo and George Kittle, Jimmy Garroppolo should continue to be effective. Last week against the Rams, he went 21-of-25 for 235 yards and two touchdowns and should be able to be the type of game manager who can keep this offense humming against any defense.

Player Props:

George Kittle under 42.5 receiving yards

The downside of all the options in San Francisco is that Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Christian McCaffrey, and George Kittle all have to battle for targets in an offense that we know likes to run. The additional bad news for Kittle is that he will likely see a lot of safety Derwin James in coverage. James is a legit defender who allows just 6.6 yards per reception. The last time Deebo sat out, in Week 8, Kittle had five targets and three catches for 39 yards. I think we’ll see something similar on Sunday night.

Deandre Carter over 35.5 receiving yards

We mentioned above that DeAndre Carter and Josh Palmer are the main receiving options for Los Angeles this week. Last week, despite being sick, Carter caught five passes and has a team-leading 6.4 air yards per reception since Week 6, which means he could get this total in one play. NFL Network writer Michelle Magdziuk also expects Charvarius Ward to be on Palmer most of the game and Ward is a legit fantastic cover corner. “The 49ers have been real real bad against the slot this year” so this could be a Carter game.

Austin Ekeler over 41.5 receiving yards

We talked about this a lot above, but Ekeler has been the key receiver for the Chargers in a game where I believe they will need to throw a lot. This doesn’t seem like a big hill for him to climb.
