By Aaron Humes: Earlier this month, the Department of the Environment (DOE) announced that after review of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) reports on the separate developments of Cockroach Caye Limited and the upgrade of the George Price Highway from Belmopan to Belize City to grant environmental clearance for both developments.
In the case of the Cockroach Caye Limited development for the proposed private residential facility located on Cockroach Caye, Turneffe Atoll, Belize District, the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC) deliberated on the project at its March 31 meeting and recommended clearance subject to certain conditions that it says will reduce the adverse
impacts of the project on the marine ecosystem near the project site, including conditions for using proper building materials.
The George Price Highway upgrade, managed by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing, was approved at the NEAC meeting on April 26 subject to conditions to reduce adverse impacts to human health and the environment along the George Price Highway.
The Department accepted the NEAC’s recommendations in both cases and both projects can now proceed.
