Nebraska football’s Ochaun Mathis and Trey Palmer were the first former Cornhuskers to hear their names called in the 2023 NFL Draft.Mathis was the 189th pick overall, drafted in the sixth round by the Los Angeles Rams. Palmer came shortly after as the 191st overall pick, drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.Mathis started his college career with TCU in 2018 before transferring to Nebraska in 2022 as an edge rusher. He started in two games out of his 12 appearances and recorded 50 tackles — five of them for a loss with 3.5 sacks and two pass breakups. Including his time at TCU, Mathis recorded 185 tackles.Palmer started his college career with 28 games over three seasons at LSU, before transferring to Nebraska for his senior season as a wide receiver. He started in 11 out of his 12 appearances and earned third-team All-Big Ten Conference accolades after setting a single-season school record — 71 receptions making 1,043 receiving yards, nine scores as a rusher and returner, ranking him second overall in Nebraska history.
