Former TCU quarterback Max Duggan was selected with a 239th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Chargers. Duggan overloaded with excitement when he received the call from the Chargers, a team that has already picked two of his former teammates: Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis. Upon turning his phone on again, Duggan is unable to hide his sense of anticipation for what awaits him as the newest addition to the franchise.
Duggan will return to the SoFi Stadium with the Chargers, the same venue where he played his college finale for TCU in a devastating 65-7 loss to Georgia in the national championship game. Duggan is not the only one returning to L.A. Stetson Bennett, who led Georgia to victory in the national championship game, was chosen by the Los Angeles Rams with the 128th overall pick to begin his pro career.
Despite being the No. 2 vote-getter for the Heisman last season, Duggan is now looking to become a sponge in the presence of the Chargers’ quarterback room. The team already has a well-established starting quarterback in 2020 first-round pick Justin Herbert, and Duggan is eager to learn as much as he can from the talented and experienced people in the franchise.
Duggan will compete for a backup role with the Chargers, a team that has just made history by selecting a quarterback and multiple skill position players from the same school in a single draft. General manager Tom Telesco was impressed with Duggan’s traits such as being a dual-threat quarterback who is strong, physical, fast, and has excellent arm strength. Telesco also praised Duggan’s grittiness and toughness, which he considers hard to find.
Last season, Duggan began his journey as a backup for TCU before taking over when the starter, Chandler Morris, suffered a knee injury in the season opener. He maintained the job and led the Horned Frogs to their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance and helped them achieve seven come-from-behind victories with five second-half comebacks.
Duggan is ready to take the next step and compete at the highest level of football. He is determined to make the most of his opportunity and add value to the Chargers’ franchise in any way he can.
