Max Duggan, the former quarterback from Texas Christian University (TCU), is joining the Los Angeles Chargers as their seventh-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft. He is one of the multiple skill position players (running back, receiver, and tight end) from the same school selected by the Chargers in a single draft, another feat to celebrate. With his phone off, Duggan must be anticipating a plethora of messages from Chargers teammates, especially Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis, whom the Bolts selected with first- and fourth-round picks.
“There’s a lot of excitement,” said Duggan from his home in Iowa. “Throughout this process, I feel like I built a lot of good relationships with all of the coaches on the coaching staff and really built up and connected with them in that way. Obviously, you see Q and DD go earlier, and there was a lot of excitement to be a part of this franchise.”
Duggan, 22, will join a quarterback room that includes 2020 first-round pick Justin Herbert and fifth-year pro Easton Stick, both established players at the Chargers. Duggan aims to become a sponge to learn as much as he can in his role as a backup.
“We thought he had some traits to work with,” said general manager Tom Telesco. “Obviously, you have a dual-threat quarterback, tough, strong, physical, fast. That’s not typically the first four traits you say for a quarterback, and he just has those at such a high level and really good arm strength.”
Duggan played exceptionally well in his last season with TCU. He began as the backup for TCU before leading the team to a school-record-tying 13 wins and their first College Football Playoff appearance in history, a remarkable feat. He also earned the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award after passing for 32 touchdowns and rushing for nine more. He helped the Horned Frogs to seven come-from-behind victories, including five second-half comebacks.
“He has skills to kind of work with and give him a chance to come in and compete,” commented Telesco. “You see him play throughout the course of his career, and he just has that grittiness and toughness that is just hard to find. We’ll work with him and see where it goes from there.”
Duggan will return to L.A. and SoFi Stadium, the venue where he played his college finale for TCU, a 65-7 loss to quarterback Stetson Bennett and the Georgia Bulldogs in the national championship game. Bennett, who was the No. 2 vote-getter for the Heisman last season, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams with a fourth-round pick, 128th overall.
The Chargers are excited to have Duggan in their team and help him improve his skills as a quarterback. With his talent and perseverance, it won’t be long until he finds his way to becoming an NFL starter.
