— The Cubs drafted Nationals manager Dave Martinez in the third round in January 1983 out of Valencia College.
— Martinez played for nine teams, including 3½ years with the Montreal Expos. They became the Washington Nationals in 2005.
— Dallas Green was his first major-league manager with the Cubs in 1986.
— Current Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild was Martinez’s manager when he played for Tampa Bay from 1998-2000.
— Martinez drove in a career-high 66 runs with Tampa Bay in 1999.
— He played in 1,918 career games, six more than Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazza.
— Martinez finished with 1,599 hits, 11 more than Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop Phil Rizzuto.
— Martinez is in his third World Series, all as a coach or manager. Martinez was the bench coach for the Rays when the Philadelphia Phillies beat them in 2008 and served in the same capacity for the Chicago Cubs when they triumphed in 2016.
— Martinez is not the first Nationals manager with Central Florida ties. Orlando native Davey Johnson managed the club in 2012 and ’13.
— Now that the Nationals have reached the World Series, the Seattle Mariners are the only team never to play for the championship.
